I hope I get the chance during Residency to have an ESL student so I can apply everything that I have learned in this class. I also enjoyed putting together the ESL toolbox, I know it will help me when I'm in my own classroom. I will also make sure I use the five things ELL students need to be successful; realia, routine, BICS, CALP, and graphic organizers. Whenever I do get a new student that is not from this region I will research their culture so I can make sure I don't offend them. I really did enjoy this class and I learned a lot. I can't wait to apply it in my own classroom.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"53598628","body":"I hope to have an ESL student during Residency as well. I have not had one during practicums yet and I would like to have the experience while we are still "practicing." I am very excited about the toolbox also and will use it with all students, not just ESL students. Realia, routine, BICS, CALP, and graphic organizers are all very important and are things which I, too, will employ. I enjoyed this class as well and look forward to the opportunity to use what I have learned.","dateCreated":"1335847165","smartDate":"Apr 30, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"ricksmv88","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ricksmv88","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"51898926","dateCreated":"1332201281","smartDate":"Mar 19, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"skroach42","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/skroach42","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1366070720\/skroach42-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/sarahroach.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51898926"},"dateDigested":1532174512,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Methodologies","description":"Some strategies that I would use for ESL students would be to make sure I have English and Spanish words next to important objects that they are working on. By doing that I think it would make the ESL student feel more comfortable and help them translate what the object is. I would also make a recording of different objects with the words stretched out in English and put the spelling with it so the students could take it home and listen to it in their free time. I would also send home easy books that I know the ESL student can read. I would make sure they know all the words and are comfortable with reading it before I would send it home. I would also pair the ESL student up with someone who is confident in certain subjects so that they could help the child with sounding out words, identifying objects, and spelling words. There are many different ways that you could help ELL students and I can't wait to keep learning new ways!","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"51947446","body":"I also thought that posting the english version and ESL students' native language version of words side by side is very important. You only mentioned spanish, though, and there may be students from all different parts of the world with many different native languages! Making a recording of words is an awesome idea! I would just worry about pronunciation and, depending on how many different native languages your students speak, there could be a LOT of recordings to make. It would be so helpful, though! Easy books are a really good idea, too, once they are able to read them as long as they actually read at home which is an issue with all students, not just ESL students.","dateCreated":"1332288837","smartDate":"Mar 20, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"ricksmv88","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ricksmv88","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"51948602","body":"Yeah, I definitely didn't mean to just say Spanish but that's just what I am use to seeing in the classrooms.","dateCreated":"1332290719","smartDate":"Mar 20, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"skroach42","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/skroach42","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1366070720\/skroach42-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"49800312","dateCreated":"1327943750","smartDate":"Jan 30, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"skroach42","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/skroach42","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1366070720\/skroach42-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/sarahroach.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49800312"},"dateDigested":1532174512,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Concerns, Thoughts, & Perceptions about ELL\/ESL","description":"My concerns about teaching ELL students is not being able to connect with them. I'm afraid that I won't be able to teach them properly because I do not understand their language. I am also concerned with the body language I use. I am afraid that I will use certain body language without thinking and offend somebody. By taking this class I think it will help me connect with them and understand how they think. I think that ELL students are going to need motivation to keep learning the English language because it is discouraging to students because the English language is so hard and confusing to learn. I think the most important thing about teaching ESL students is to keep positive and to keep learning fun.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"49881158","body":"I worry about the body language thing as well! I never knew how many things we do that have completely different and offensive meanings in different cultures. It makes me want to watch every little move I make so that I don't offend anyone! I agree that it may be difficult to connect with ESL students because of the language barriers. English is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn so students will run into many obstacles and frustrations in the classroom so it is very important that we keep them motivated and feeling positive about their progress. I am looking forward to learning strategies in this class so that I will become more comfortable and able to succeed with the ESL students I have in my furture classrooms.","dateCreated":"1328064646","smartDate":"Jan 31, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"ricksmv88","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ricksmv88","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
